Most of it comes from actual service calls. When the same water treatment question comes up three times in a month, it usually means the information is hard to find elsewhere.
Hardness is the recurring theme. Hill Country water treatment nearly always starts with softening, because 15 to 25 grains per gallon is the regional baseline rather than an outlier.
Well owners get particular attention here. Private wells are unregulated, so well water treatment decisions fall entirely to the owner, and good information matters more.
We try to be specific about numbers. Vague water treatment advice is easy to write and useless to act on, so where we can give a figure, a range or an interval, we do.
We also try to be honest about what does not work. Some water treatment products are marketed well beyond what they actually do, and salt-free conditioning is the clearest example.

A recurring theme in our water treatment writing is that the right answer depends on numbers you do not have until somebody measures them. Hardness, iron, pH and bacteria are not things you can judge by looking at the water.
The second recurring theme is sequence. On a private well, the order of water treatment stages matters more than the brand on the tank, and getting it wrong is the most expensive mistake we are called out to correct.
The third is maintenance. A great deal of failed water treatment equipment is not really failed. It has been unserviced for years, the media is exhausted, and nobody knew the intervals.

Finally, we try to say plainly when a water treatment product does less than its marketing suggests. That is not a competitive dig, it is simply what we would want to know as a customer.
A short glossary helps, because the vocabulary in this trade is unnecessarily opaque. Grains per gallon is the American unit for hardness; one grain per gallon is roughly 17.1 milligrams per litre, which is the unit most laboratories report in.
Regeneration is the cycle where a softener flushes accumulated calcium and magnesium off its resin bed using brine, then rinses. How often that happens is a function of capacity and household demand, and it is the single biggest driver of salt consumption.
Resin is the bed of small beads inside the tank that does the ion exchange. It is durable but not immortal, and it is destroyed by chlorine on city supplies and by iron on wells, which is why what sits upstream of it matters so much.
Backwash is the reverse flow that lifts and cleans a media bed. Filters that backwash need a drain connection and enough flow to lift the bed properly, which is a common oversight in retrofits.
Oxidation is how iron is removed. Dissolved iron is invisible until it meets air or an oxidising media, at which point it becomes a particle that a filter can catch. That is why the orange staining often appears in the bowl rather than at the tap.
Hydrogen sulfide is a dissolved gas rather than a mineral, which is exactly why softening does nothing to it. It has to be oxidised or adsorbed, and the method depends on how much gas is present.
Total dissolved solids is a broad measure of everything dissolved in the water. It correlates loosely with taste, and it is the number reverse osmosis moves most dramatically.
Micron rating describes what a sediment filter will catch. Lower numbers catch finer particles but clog faster, so the right rating is a balance between clarity and how often you want to change cartridges.
Finally, a note on salt. Sodium chloride and potassium chloride both work; potassium costs more and is chosen by households who want to reduce sodium discharge. Pellet form generally bridges less than crystal in humid conditions.
