When the resin is saturated it regenerates, flushing brine through the bed to recharge it and sending the hardness to drain.

Sizing: the part that gets done badly

Sizing is the step that decides whether a water softener installation performs or disappoints, and it is arithmetic. People in the house times daily use times grains per gallon gives the grain load per day.

What installation day looks like

On city water a straightforward water softener installation is usually a half day. The unit goes in on the main line after the meter and before the water heater.

It needs three things nearby: a drain for regeneration, a power outlet for the valve, and enough space to get salt in and out comfortably.

Wells change the order of work

On a private well, a softener is rarely the first stage. Sediment comes out first, then iron and sulfur, and only then does softening make sense.

Iron is the reason. Untreated iron fouls resin, capacity collapses, and the softener that seemed faulty was simply installed in the wrong order.
