Sulfur and sediment
Hydrogen sulfide produces the rotten egg smell. It is a dissolved gas, so a softener does nothing and a plain cartridge filter does little.
Sediment blinds whatever sits downstream of it, which is why it is always the first stage rather than an afterthought.
Both are straightforward to treat once measured. The part that gets skipped is the measuring.
