Why Hill Country wells carry iron
Iron is one of the most abundant elements in the earth crust, and groundwater moving slowly through rock dissolves it. Wells across Kendall, Kerr, Gillespie and Comal counties commonly show it, and iron removal becomes the defining part of the treatment design when they do.
Concentration matters more than presence. Below about 0.3 milligrams per litre most households never notice. Above that, staining begins, and by 1 to 2 milligrams per litre the effect on laundry and fixtures is obvious.
Depth and geology drive the variation. Two wells on the same road can differ substantially because they draw from different horizons, which is why iron removal is specified per property rather than per area.

How to recognise an iron problem
Rust-coloured staining in basins, baths and toilet cisterns is the classic sign. Laundry comes out of the machine with an orange cast, and white fabrics suffer worst.
Taste changes too. Water with meaningful iron content has a metallic edge, and it noticeably affects tea, coffee and anything boiled in it.
A telling diagnostic is water that runs clear from the tap and then turns orange after standing. That is dissolved ferrous iron oxidising in contact with air, and it confirms that iron removal needs an oxidising stage rather than a simple filter.

Understanding which form you have determines which iron removal method will actually work, and it is where most mis-specified systems go wrong.

Iron removal methods compared
There is no single best method. The right iron removal choice depends on concentration, form, pH and how much maintenance the household wants.

pH matters more than most homeowners expect. Oxidising media work poorly in acidic water, so on low pH wells a correction stage often has to precede iron removal for either to perform.
Why iron removal must come before the softener
This is the single most expensive mistake we are called out to correct. A softener resin bed is designed to exchange calcium and magnesium for sodium. Iron coats and clogs that resin, a process called fouling.
A fouled softener loses capacity, regenerates constantly, uses far more salt and eventually stops softening altogether. By then the resin usually needs replacing rather than cleaning.
Correct iron removal upstream prevents all of it. The order is sediment, then iron, then softening, then disinfection where bacteria are present, and it is not negotiable.

Iron bacteria: a different problem
Iron bacteria are living organisms that feed on iron and leave a slimy orange or brown deposit. They are not a health hazard in themselves, but they clog pipes, foul equipment and produce a swampy odour.
Filtration does not solve them. The well itself normally needs shock chlorinating first, and only then does ongoing iron removal make sense.
Recurrence is common where the wellhead is not properly sealed, so we look at the cap and surface drainage as part of the diagnosis rather than treating the symptom repeatedly.

Maintenance and running costs
Oxidising media beds backwash on a schedule and need a drain. The media itself is gradually consumed and typically needs replacing every five to ten years depending on load.
Aeration systems add a small pump or venturi to maintain, and the tank benefits from periodic inspection. In exchange they handle sulfur alongside iron, which is often decisive on Hill Country wells.
Chemical injection is the most hands-on, requiring solution to be mixed and topped up. We fit it where the water genuinely demands it rather than as a default.
